UCLA researchers have shown that exposure of zebra fish embryos to the dithiocarbamate fungicide ziram is associated with selective loss of the dopaminergic neurons and swimming impairments. Researches also found that ziram promoted formation of aggregates of γ1 synuclein, the functional homologue of α-synuclein in zebra fish. Depleting the γ1 synuclein from the zebrafish rendered them resistant to the ziram-induced toxicity in the dopaminergic neurons. These findings provide additional insight into the various mechanisms by which pesticides can interact with PD to modify disease progression.
