The Yale Daily News is reporting on a new study by Rauh and colleagues at Yale suggesting that prenatal exposure to the organophosphate insecticide, chlorpyrifos is associated with an increased risk for upper extremity tremor in childhood.

Neurology advisor.com is reporting on a new study by National Institutes of Health researchers suggesting that reactivated viral genes may be involved in some forms of ALS. The researchers showed that the brains of ALS patients have higher concentrations of mRNA encoded by the human endogenous retrovirus-K (HERV-K). The envelope (env) protein, encoded by the HERV-K gene may play a role in neurodegeneration. Expression of the HERV-K gene or its env protein caused retraction and beading of the axons and dendrites of cultured human neurons. Transgenic mice with the HERV-K gene experienced problems with balance and walking and did not live as long as wild-type mice. Link to full story in Neurology Advisor. Pesticide Exposure Implicated in Increased Risk of Developing Parkinson's Disease Among Gaza Farmers10/4/2015 Haaretz is reporting on the results of study by Yitshak et al., showing an increased risk for Parkinson’s disease among the members of Jewish agricultural communities living near the Gaza border. Among members of communities living in areas with many cultivated fields the risk of PD was 54 percent higher than the regional average. The authors concluded that their study "provides further evidence for the interplay between ethnicity and environmental factors contributing to PD epidemiology." This study did not stratify subjects by age at onset and it did not look at duration of exposure.
