Medscape correspondent Pauline Anderson is reporting on the findings of a large nationwide population-based study by Tsai and colleagues suggesting Hepatitis C may be a risk factor for PD. While the authors of this study recognize that PD is a multifactorial disorder their research nevertheless suggests that Hepatitis C should be included among these factors which also include head injury and exposure to neurotoxicants. The article appears in the journal Neurology.

The Australian government has approved a first of its kind clinical trial of stem cell therapy for Parkinson's disease. The new study by Dr. Robert Abbott of the Shiga University of Medical Science in Otsu, Japan, and colleagues looked at the brains and milk consumption history of 449 Japanese-American men living in Hawaii. Men who drank more than 16 ounces of milk a day showed a loss of brain cells in the substantia nigra. This association between milk intake and a reduction in nigral neuron density was not seen in smokers.
A significant increased risk for PD has previously been reported in pineapple plantation workers (Van Maele-Fabry et al., 2012). Link to original story in NBC News Link to article in Neurology. |
