A recent report in JAMA Oncology suggests that there is an association between Parkinson's disease and cancer among residents of Taiwan, China. The authors attributed the differences between their findings and those of some previous reports to ethnic differences and environmental exposures. It is important to note that the role of genetic polymorphisms that regulate the activity of enzymes such as glutathione-S-transferase (e.g., GSTM1 null genotype) which play a role in the detoxification of chemicals implicated in both Parkinson's Disease and cancer were not explored in this study. That said, another recent study found an association between exposure to air pollution and increased risk for Parkinson's Disease indicating that more work in this area is needed.
