An organochlorine pesticide used on pineapples called heptachlor which also made its way into milk supply through contaminated feed in Hawaii has been implicated as a risk factor for developing Parkinson's disease. The new study by Dr. Robert Abbott of the Shiga University of Medical Science in Otsu, Japan, and colleagues looked at the brains and milk consumption history of 449 Japanese-American men living in Hawaii. Men who drank more than 16 ounces of milk a day showed a loss of brain cells in the substantia nigra. This association between milk intake and a reduction in nigral neuron density was not seen in smokers.
